For this piece i will be reviewing both Wasps by Andrea Arnold and Soft by Simon Ellis and seeing the similarities and differences. In both of these short films they show very different people sharing their lives in poverty and politics and how it was portrayed in the variety of ways, they explore a variety of themes such as hate, love, jealousy and revenge.
Wasps starts of by showing the distressed and in a way degrading flats which the family reside in, you truly get a feel for the place due to interesting and important shot sizes which include Mis-en-scene throughout showing the surrounding and background to the short film, the quality clear quality shots which represents wealthy families and poor quality to represent the youth of the community this is unlike Soft. This short film really is a good portrayal of the environment they are living in due to the costumes they are presented with they really represent the time and in a way the place they are surviving in. You see the sadness from the children because of the presentation of the dirt and filth on their faces and in a way sadness. You are presented straight away with the violence it seems from the mother towards her kids but you get a sense that she is trying to protect them but in a very unkind manner, her manners also seemed to have rubbed of on the children when they use cursive language and show their middle fingers towards her. This is a lot like Soft because cursive language towards various citizens which in a way tells us that we are concerned for the workers and their welfare. In a way you see her mother cares truly when she looks out for her oldest daughter when she is being in a way bullied by a fellow girl in the neighbourhood.
The strongest theme throughout Wasps in hate because of the fact the mother hates anything to do with wealth and the people who own it for example the other mothers that enter the pub. Soft aldo hints on the hate theme because in it the young people hate on the old man due his privileges and high class it seems. Overall it seems that both of these short films shows the same portrayal but it seems in different ways but you can tell that both the directors put across the story well because it made you truly think what a persons affect can have on an individual and the community.
Overall my favourite short film was Soft because i preferred the suspense in the story line and the actors in it, it overall really sold me and made me believe that i was truly there and in his position.
