Get Off My Land Review
The onset of the short film written and directed by Douglas M Ray you are shown a panoramic shot of the landscape and the place in which they are, which let's you understand the surroundings for example in this short film you understand that the land is quite desolate with only a few fields for animals not a lot of human interaction.I like this part of the short film because it allows you to truly understand and experience the place in which they are and the distance they are travelling, over coming a few obstacles in the way but finally reaching a place in which they felt safe and secure to find out the worst is yet to come. For 55 seconds they are alone only these two trekking into the neighbouring fields, however then they come across the farmer and his appalling attitude due to them so called trespassing on his land. The farmer tells them to leave but then the so called boyfriend it seems from there very close and person touching of the chest when she is ready to leave indicates that they are surely not related to leave the land. The boyfriend then thinks that he wants to truly understand the reason in which they can't pass and brings it up to the farmer questioning his authority and also his pride. The farmer walks of the audience thinking that he is just leaving and removing himself from the situation but instead he is creating a whole other problem when he steps back towards them with a gun in arm, with an aim to fire. Thinking he is bluffing the couple both stand still with no emotion on their faces until the man lets the shot go which hits the boyfriend. This scene was good because the backlash of one little question costed the man his life and in a way the farmer his freedom by killing the man cold blood. You believe that he is gone leaving the women blood stained face and speechless but she screams and you finally hear the gunshot which wakes the birds to fly maybe representing the bodies/souls of the couple leaving this horrific place. The short film overall was in a way gripping because there are various scenes and scenarios that i didn't see coming, this made me become more gripped to the piece which truly opened my eyes to the story and the meaning behind a mans honour and pride and that by taking that away you dont deserve to live and that is what i see by the farmers actions, overall it was very gripping and a great story line.
